I have loved this place for a long long time. Yes, it's weird. Yes, the sushi master is a little full of himself. The restroom leaves a little to be desired. That said, the sushi is darn good, the miso is hot, the agedashi tofu is usually so yummy,,, and they sort of have a captive audience. I was happy to be held captive, last time, myself. I tucked into several rolls and was a happy happy girl.

Old steakhouse turned sushi restaurant. Bests sushi on the coast. Funky place, slow service, but well worth it. The owner used to have a sushi restaurant in Portland. Tired of the rat race, he moved to the small coastal community of Seal Rock and opened Yuzen. I am so glad he did. Hours are a little odd, and since we often go out to eat at off-peak times, we often find Yuzen closed. We frown and drive on to someplace else.

There used to be a British pub where Yuzen is and the exterior/interior, redone in a Japanese style, reflects that with Celtic looking stained glass windows and big beamed ceilings. But they've added lanterns and twinkly lights and other attractive items to the decor. There are some cozy nooks in here but it isn't glamorous. The dishes and such are on the cheap side and not terribly impressive BUT the food is really good. I've been about four times and my mom goes probably once a week. It's consistently good and they have a big selection of Japanese dishes, sushi and sashimi dishes. At lunch, they have combo plates for about $8 that have a little bit of everything! I got one with salmon, sushi, salad and tempura and it was all fantastic. I've been for dinner several times and had some delicious sushi rolls. The special rolls are better than the standard rolls -- especially the Seal Rock roll. Yum! Service is good though it always seems to take a long time to get the bill.

Yuzen has been almost a staple whenever we go to the coast for the past year. My boyfriend's parents live just a few minutes away so it's a nice place to grab dinner, not to mention it's one of the few places to get sushi around Newport and the food is really excellent. I will say that it can get extremely busy some nights and since it seems like they only have a few waitresses on staff (there's one that I swear must work every night and sometime she's the only one on), well, sometimes things can get backed up and you might be waiting for awhile. But overall I recommend Yuzen for fresh, well-prepared rolls at reasonable prices. I really like the Newport roll and my guy loves the Godzilla and Hawaiian rolls. If you have room after all the sushi try the black sesame ice cream - it's my favorite!

On recommendation of a friend we dropped in on a sunday night while staying nearby. The service was a little slow as there was one waitress for the whole place and there were a couple of larger parties. The food made it worth the wait. Had a shrimp tempura roll ($7)and their Hawaiian roll (spice tuna roll with ahi and avocado on the outside, $12). Both were delicious and very fresh. We also ordered the special terriyaki dinner combo which came with veggie tempura, california roll, fruit, miso soup and house salad. It was quite a lot of food and was about $16. Don't be fooled by the exterior. If you are in the area and feel the need for sushi, this is the place!

As new residents of Waldport, we were very optimistic about Yuzen in passing. The outside of the establishment has plenty of character after all. We had also never experienced fresh sushi on the shores of the Oregon coast! Personally, I thought that the inside of Yuzen was a little confusing. The dim lit atmosphere with the wooden interior, and the pieced together stained glass windows gave the place an "Irish pub meets Japanese cuisine" feel. Our service was subpar, and the menu was lack luster. With such a creative exterior I had expected the menu to be a little bit more playful and creative. Let me start off by saying that miso soup was amazing! By far the best miso I have had yet! Sadly, the rest of our order was a train wreck. Our rolls were wrapped so loosely that when we went to pick up one piece of a roll, we would consistently unravel the one adjacent to it. And that "fresh fish" experience that we were looking for was either non-existent or over powered with too much vinegar or too much salt that had seeped into the over cooked rice through the water-like consistency of the sauce. In the end, we felt that that cost of the meal did not match the quality of food. It was a good thing that we were never asked by our waitress how our meal was because this was probably the worst sushi I have ever eaten. I am giving Yuzen 2 out of 5 stars because I was that much in love with their miso soup, and the service could have been worse I guess. Unfortunately, we will never return... even for the miso.

Second visit two summers in a row & still great - my girlfriend & I love this place - as good as any sushi I've had in NYC. A must visit If you're on the coast.

Hands down my favorite sushi restaurant in Oregon. Seal Rock is about a three hour drive from Portland and Yuzen is worth the drive! Yuzen is consistent. You could expect fresh sushi made by the one sushi chef and served by the same waitress, whom has been working there for at least the last seven years that I have been dining there. Service could be a little slow, but it's has such a pleasurable atmosphere that wait is well worth it. The Agedashi Tofu in broth and without broth are some of the best tofu I have eaten, the crunchy texture is perfect. My personal favorites are the salmon skin handroll, Kari Kari roll and papaya roll. According to my companions, the lobster roll and Lulu roll are must have. If you are heading South on 101, don't hesitate to stop by Yuzen for a rather delicious find.

Yuzen is a bizarre place. The building architecture is the traditional German half-tembered style, like a Barbarian beer hall. But since it's a sushi place, and not a beer hall, they decided to decorate the traditional German beer hall like a tenth century Japanese pagoda. And as if this merging of Axis architecture wasn't enough, they dragged in a monster movie prop and erected a fifty foot sushi samurai to scare traffic out on the Pacific Coast Highway. The interior is more of the same - Japanese lanterns and teutonic stained glass. The place is dark, with dark wooden booths. The service is...well it's like they are natives of the Oregon coast, and have never really been completely dry in their lives, so they have no real concept of contentment. Service is slow, and the arrival of your food will be delayed regardless of volume of business - it simply makes no difference. We order, and chat until we have nothing more to say. We stare out the stained glass windows. We make origami, and finally our sushi arrives. Why do we put up with this? Why do we suffer this horrible clash of architectures, damp gnomes & cheesy monsters? Why? Because the sushi is great! Actually, we've been coming here so so long that we have achieved acceptance - accepted the things we cannot change. Yuzen is locally famous for their lobster roll. It's not so much the roll that makes you smile - although it's excellent - but rather the dipping sauce that comes with it. They will not reveal how it is made even though everyone who tastes it asks - it's a secret and it's worth the trip to Seal Rock to wait for it.

I believe that Yuzen is closed and this is richly deserved. Yuzen used to be a wonderful sushi restaurant before the previous owner, Sada, sold it and moved his very impressive talents to the wharf in Newport. The quality of the sushi rapidly deteriorated, and the last time I was there, an order of creamy scallops mostly consisted of mayonnaise and sliced scallions wrapped in a roll. (First law: if you can't provide it, take it off the menu.)

Unexpected find in Seal Rock. We love the lobster roll! Service has been spotty on past visits, but recently was good. The food is consistently good. The rolls are creative. We left satisfied with our dinner. We'll be back when we're in the area.

There's bound to be sushi in Oregon since it's so close to the coast. This is the one gem in Waldport anyone should go to if they are stopping into town for a while. The wait was a little while, but if specified which we didn't, the rolls ordered could come out one at a time. Also, if you order the tempura, be aware of the large amount of vegetables you will be getting for 10 dollars. We left stuffed.

We used to love visiting Yuzen the couple of times of the year when we stayed along this area of the Oregon coast - who would think you could get decent Japanese food in Seal Rock of all places? Most of the sushi is pretty straightforward, and a couple of items are great. The lobster roll is far and away the best thing I've ever eaten in any sushi joint. Now, I'm just wondering why yelp won't let me rate them zero stars. Last holiday season, before New Year's, a group of us went for a special dinner. When our first selection arrived, we all looked at it cautiously. The monkfish liver was a series of perfect, circular slices folded over each other on an attractive plate; it looked like a processed product that had been packed in casing and tasted off and sour; it was clearly not fresh. I sent it back (only the second time in my life, I swear). About fifteen minutes later, the older, Japanese gentleman who'd been preparing sushi behind the bar arrived at our table and dropped the partially-eaten tray down on our table. He looked me directly in the eye and told me that he'd tried the liver, that nothing was wrong with it and it would not be subtracted from our bill. He was confrontational when he asked me if we wanted to finish this sour liver. Um, sorry no, creepy dude. The next time the waitress stopped by, I told her what had happened and that this was not cool. She informed me that the chef was also the owner and she'd see what she could do. The poor woman seemed stressed, and I felt bad that he'd put her in this position. It was not taken off our ticket. The six of us spent about $150, and none of us will be back. The owner/chef's actions were hostile, and I've never seen anything like it. He was really weird and aggressive, and now I don't want to eat at Yuzen again.

My family of 5 stopped here for dinner. All the food was great. The sashimi was very fresh and delicious. The rolls (godzilla and spider) were also excellent. The food was just as good as a good restaurant in San Francisco. The service was excellent; very attentive and friendly. Despite ordering rolls and sashimi, which normally take a long time, they were ready very fast ( about 15 min).

Puzzled by the good reviews here because our experience was anything but good. The food server was skilled but so swamped that she could rarely get to us. Food took a long time and was loosely rolled, so-so quality. But for me the dirty window sills, spider webs, and sewage smell coming from the bathrooms was just too much. The sign of a poorly maintained property. One of the very few occasions I've given such a poor rating to a restaurant. Too bad, too, because we love sushi and live only a couple of miles away.

Based on previous reviews we went with a plan. We arrived at 2 pm on a Tuesday in April. We sat at the sushi bar so we could watch the sushi master. We were the only patrons. We immediately ordered miso and veggie tempura, the ADD hostess/waitress was very distracted but friendly our food came quickly and the master came out and talked and shared during our whole lunch, It was an honor. He retired from running two restaurants in Cali to enjoy a slower paced life. The price was much different than Sushi Land in Portland (which I really enjoy) but the skill of the preparation and the freshness of the sashimi is worth it as an indulgence in both the art and taste of food. If you want a quick lunch on a budget don't even try Yuzen. Instead come to spend a little more and enjoy the experience.

I have high expectations for a sushi/Japanese restaurant because I was a waitress at one In California. Ever since I moved up to Waldport Oregon I've been craving some good sushi. I always pass this place on the way to Newport and finally my boyfriend took me out to dinner here. The waiter ended up forgetting about us and it took awhile for him to take our because the dinner rush had been a busy one but he made it up for giving us our sake free which was nice! We ordered miso and 3 rolls to share and oh my god I can't get over how delicious and fresh they were. I absolutely loved the sushi rolls and can't wait to go back soon. We tried the newport roll, yahacts roll and the Perpetua wave roll. All 3 were different but equally great!!! Yumm!

Yuzen's Lobster Roll will start and end this review. The lobster roll and it's custom broiled sauce is to be savored. All Yuzen sushi has been the freshest we have experienced. The Tuna (Maguro) is succulent as butter. Yuzen has one sushi chef and one kitchen chef and, when busy, it may take some time to receive your prize. For seven years we have tried to duplicate the lobster roll experience and yet we continue to travel over an hour each way to make our regular Yuzen pilgrimage.

Service lacks a bit. Food is decent but nothing to rave over. It's the better alternative to Sada's in Newport. At least you get your food in a timely manner. Menu items lack creativity and can be somewhat bland. Being on the coast I expect fresh fish...not always the case.

I used to really enjoy Yuzen. Over the past couple of years I feel like the product and service has steadily declined and the price has gone up. The waitresses in this place tend to make me feel like I'm at a truck stop diner. I know it's next to Waldport, so I can't expect much, but at least someone who has a basic sushi knowledge would be nice. The woman on the last visit slaughtered the pronunciation of the dishes ("temprah") and looked like she did her fair share of hard drugs in the bathroom of Seagull Tavern in the early 90's... Anyways, it just didn't feel like the type of service you'd expect at a sushi place... As for the sushi: Why does everything come with wasabi already on it? I'm into wasabi, but not every sushi eater is, and when you smear it all over the nigiri without asking, you might have a few upset customers. If I had written this review two years ago it would have been 5 stars. Maybe Yuzen is going through a recession phase and will improve it's product and service when more money makers in Newport and Corvallis put the pressure on. The place is almost always cold, so dress warm, and stay away from the bathroom. Looks like a toilet from the 4th world.

We go here a few times a month, and it's the best sushi! Yes the service may be slow and not the best, but the quality of the sushi is amazing. I've had a lot of sushi, and I'll say without a doubt that Yuzen is the best. I especially enjoy the simplicity of the rolls. So many sushi restaurants are adding so many fancy "stuffs" and sauces all over their rolls. Yuzen roll's are simple but great!

The reviews won't lead you wrong on this sushi establishment! All the rolls sushi or not were bomb.com ! The sashimi is fresh and delightful! Order EXTRA! And the prices are comparable to ANY good restaurant! DUDE! I ordered a HUGE amount of sushi and it was only $70. I ordered 5 different sushi rolls and sashimi! The trojan, Hawaiian, spider, lobster, and Waldport rolls are delicious! And as far atmosphere... UH, I'm not there for the decor! GREAT place! Don't miss it!

This place rocks! And such a find out on the coast. We had sushi for six a la carte and it was reasonable and fresh and yummy.

I fell into a state of perfect contenment at taking my first bite of the food I was served in this supremely odd-looking place. For the week prior, I had been eating food I slapped together from stuff taken out of a cooler in the back seat of the car while on vacation, so that might have had a little to do with it. Still ... My first glance of the exterior made me want to stop. I'd never seen (1) a Bavarian-looking building, on (2) the Oregon coast, with (3) a GIANT sign in the shape of a Japanese man dressed in Samurai(?) garb, grinning maniacally and holding out a bowl of something. That alone deserved hitting the brakes. So I went in and was seated and began to wait for a pretty darn long time (that's happened every time). As it happened, I was close enough to the cash register to hear this one woman, who seemed to be more or less in charge, predicting various kinds of doom to the waitresses the entire time I was there. She didn't know if they'd have room, she didn't know if they'd have the ingredients they needed to get through the night, she worried about everything. She never stopped worrying and she never kept any of it to herself. I began to expect the worst. And then my food showed up and it honestly seemed to me, at the time, that I'd never eaten anything better in my life. I've since eaten there a few more times and found the food only great, because it wasn't a surprise anymore. But that first time, I really was amazed. It was fresh, light, tasty, beautifully seasoned, and plentiful and that woman was worried? About WHAT?

I have gone to this based on the previous listed reviews. I have travelled with 8 friends to see what the reviews had raved about. additionally, to satisfied our sushi crave. Food/Drinks. I had ordered just the brown rice tea, which was hot and satisfying for the long cold day of hiking. Entrees/Main Dishes. I ordered my baseline repetoire of sushi rolls, to at least include: spicy tuna, avocado, and eel. However, eel was not available as a sushi roll, but there was a roll that contained eel. Additionally, i had ordered some edamame beans and miso soup. Also, my partner had added the sashimi tako and a yellow-tail based roll. when the food arrived, i had already noticed the presentation compared to my previous sushi experiences, and was not impress. In some of the rolls, the fish were falling out of the sushi form. Of course, I (along with partner) had ended up finishing the entree. The tuna and the yellowtail did not seem fresh as their "fishy" flavor was quite strong, which genuinely serves as a freshness indicator. For dessert, I had ordered the red bean ice-cream. My friends had ordered some other flavors to share: mango, green tea, toasted black sesame. Of all the foods I had this evening, I had never tried tried the toasted black sesame ice-cream and found it to be amazing. if ever, i would only go back for that item. Service. The hostess/waitiress was very friendly. One of our friends had called ahead of time indicating we'd arrive prior to the last-service to closing if they permitted to serve us. the hostess acknowledged our arrival. i would describe her as an enthusiastic local eager to serve. In addition to serving, she had told us the a humorous story of the "waldport" roll, it seemed to received a few chuckles from our end. Lastly, it was nice of the hostess to offer to split the bill in singles and couples amongst the nine of us. Overall, I did not agree with the rave of the previous reviews. If i could suggest some improvements, perhaps better, effective storage for the fish?

Yuzen has been a favorite of ours since they opened. The sushi is always superb and if you like something unusual and spicy, I recommend the Kiska roll. We feel very lucky to have such a good restaurant in such an unlikely place. Any other good restaurant is a considerably longer drive from Seal Rock. The sushi chef has been there a long time and it seems he is wasted being in the back room. He does work at his own pace and does not seem to hire any help with preparation. We've had extraordinarily long waits if there are too many who order sushi. We don't go if we are in a hurry and plan on conversation, plum wine and hefeweizen. Luckily, many of the patrons order other items. The building was constructed for a tavern and the interior remains tavern like with booths and unpadded bench seats. They do offer a seat pad so it is not uncomfortable. And, please to not order take out. They are pretty passive aggressive about making takeout orders after one arrives so the wait is as long as if one asked to be seated. I'm rather happy with this reluctance to offer takeout as the wait is more predictable for the rest of us.

While the food here is always good, the service is hit-or-miss. I swore I wouldn't go again after I, along with a few friends, had to wait for more than an hour and a half for our food, making us really late for an event we were going to. However, I have been back since and it was much faster. So, if you have a lot of free time, I would recommend it, but the wait does not make it worth it. There are not a lot of restaurants to choose from in Seal Rock, and the food here is really good, so it is a decent choice if you have the time.

Yuzen should mean super sushi, not traditional kimono dying methods. The Yachats Roll will knock your socks off as will almost anything on the menu. The service is fair to decent and the atmosphere is akin to an old sushi shop on the shores of an Okinawan beach. The exterior almost made me turn around and avoid the place like the plague, but now I am glad I went in. They have inventive rolls, such as the yachats, as well as normal sushi staples. The hamachi was superb as was the ebi and hotate. The tea leaves something to be desired as it was gritty and may be because of the local water, it has a strange taste in this area. But the sushi is spot on and as fresh as you can get. So if you pass by a sushi spot in Seal Rock that looks like an old German Hof house, take a gander inside and you'll be rewarded with excellent sushi.
